Miracles!!!

I cannot thank my family enough for helping me have such a wonderful Birthday last Tuesday! It was such a wonderful day full of surprises and happiness. So thank you to all!!!!!!!
There were so many miracles that happened this week. The first miracle I want to tell you about is the opportunity I had to go to the temple. All I have to say is "WOW" it was such a powerful experience and I honestly cannot wait to go back!!!! I was in tears at so many different points during the session. I definitely felt the spirit so much stronger than I have before. I am so grateful that our week worked out in planning so that I could attend the temple. Its such a strength to me to be able to attend. The other miracles of the week is that we received 2 member referrals this week! One came from a member in Utah the other is a friend in our ward. The Utah referral gave us his friend. He said that she is going through a really hard time and doesn't know where else to turn. We called her right after to schedule an appointment and left a message. Miraculously enough she called back!!!! We set up a meeting time!!! ;D When we met this girl we found her very willing to listen. We just spent time talking to her and doing a little bit of a how to begin teaching session. We told her our purpose and what we taught, that we talk about Jesus Christ and that what we teach would bring her profound peace. We set another appointment for Saturday night. When we arrived she was even more eager to have us there. She shared with us that since her divorce she hasn't had much peace in her life but that since we left on Thursday night she has felt more peace. ;D We were so excited. We taught her the restoration and during the first vision her eyes were fixed on Sister Kemp as she was talking. The spirit was so strong and I know she felt it. As we talked about The Book of Mormon I sensed her softening quite a bit. When we were done we continued talking about some of her past experiences with feeling happy, lasting happiness. She shared that on her wedding day she felt happiness but since the divorce she will never be able to look back on that day and feel happy memories. I felt the spirit very strongly prompting me to promise her that if she were to read the BOM then she would find a lasting happiness because God loves her and wants her to be happy. I started crying while testifying and promising her these things. I know she felt the promise touch her heart because I saw it in her eyes. She was eager to accept our commitments and told us that she has never met any church people as enthusiastic as we are about what we believe. It sounds like it has made a real difference for her! It was a powerful lesson and I truly felt the Lords direction. She came to church yesterday and really enjoyed it! Also a ward member invited us to dinner with her to be invited as well. Guess what?! She came and when we left she stayed to talk with our ward member!!!!!! So amazing!
On Wednesday we got a text from our institute director saying that we needed to hurry over to the institute because there was an investigator at the lunch that was going on. We couldn't get there immediately and missed her. However her best friend was there and started telling us all about this promising potential investigator. Her friend has been attending the Book of Mormon institute class. Also she totally came to church 2 Sundays ago and none of us realized she wasn't a member!!!!!!! We were also told that she has been talking to another friend and told him that she was interested in talking to the missionaries but didn't know how to go about doing it.!!! We got all her information then left. When we got in the car Sister Kemp and I just let our jaws drop. We sat in silence for a little bit then started asking questions like, "Did that just happen?" We were in awe and recognized very quickly that the Lords hand has been in our week. About an hour later this guy friend called to tell us about this girl. We eventually decided to text her and we quickly set an appointment. Our appointment went well and she is eager to continue learning. She also came to church and told Sister Kemp that one day as she was driving she was stuck at a really long red light. She decided to pray while waiting. When she was done with her prayer she opened her eyes. Right in front of her were two Elders crossing the road and they waved at her. She took it as a sign that God had heard her prayer. What her prayer was about we aren't sure but we know it was a good experience for her. It has just been an amazing week for us! So we got 2 investigators this week and had a rare 3 member presents.
Oh yeah!!! Our Bishop has totally come through on what he wants to see happen in our ward! He gave us 10 names to start concentrating on and we talked about other names in the ward for ward missionaries. Plus he has asked the auxiliary's to be missionary oriented from now on. Its absolutely amazing!!!!! I am so excited for all the changes that are going on in our ward!!!!!! I am super nervous that the Lord will have me moved before I can see the benefits in our ward happen. However I know that the Lord will not let things fail. It is His work and He will help it happen using the right individuals as instruments in His hands.
I love this work and I am so happy to be a missionary right now! I hope all of you have a wonderful time this week!!!!!!!!!!!! Hurrah for Israel!

Happy Birthday to Me!

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Yes its my Birthday on Tuesday and I really appreciate all the Birthday wishes you have all sent me. What does a missionary do on their birthday? They Bring the World His Truth!!!! Its going to be just a normal day and its going to be awesome. We have some really good plans and it will pass just as any other day. One of the sisters that lives with us who just came in is having a birthday on the 19th. So we are all going to the temple on Wednesday. It just works better for us to do it then. I am really excited to go and see the new video in the temple!!!! Hopefully there isn't someone who needs head phones because I have been told that if there is they use the old movie. Keeping my fingers crossed! However if it does happen its okay because the ordinance is still the same and the person on the other side still receives their salvation, and that's what counts! :D

Taking the new missionaries out was amazing on Monday! There were so many of them!!!! I was totally able to sign in a street contact while out with a new sister! I was so excited!!!!! I don't know much but I was able to understand what he was saying and sign back. IT WAS SO COOL!!!!!!!! As always its a tiring day and we had a ton of packing to do that night. Sister Scrivner had been in the area for 7 months and collected a ton of junk. We stayed up pretty late cleaning and packing. As I was praying that night I started getting pretty nervous about my new companion. With so many companions that have just be difficult to work with all my mind was doing was what if's. Never a good thing... So I decided to pray for help to focus on being her best friend this next transfer. I had found out earlier in the day who my comp was going to be and I was thinking about her personality and how I am totally not like her. But its okay because we have been great so far! Her name is Sister Kemp and she is another Sister Training Leader from the other valley. I think it was around Wednesday afternoon she told me something that totally set me at peace about her being my companion. She told me that last transfer President Hall was going to put us together and release Sister Scrivner but there were some things that came up with her last companion that he didn't want to separate them just quite yet. As I was thinking about all that she told me I realized that she really is needed in this area and I think she will be what helps make the difference in our ward. Also we were meant to be together as companions a while ago. The Lord is all knowing and will help us do the things that we need to do. Obviously Sister Kemp and I have some work to do here. I am excited to see what the Lord has in store for us.

We got our newly assigned stewardships for sister training leader stuff. We used to have 4 companionships that we would exchange with. Now we have 7!!!!!!!!!!! Agh!!!! There are so many! However our stewardship now has us going to every sister area in the San Fernando Valley! We cover North Hollywood, Studio City, Mission Hills, Granada Hills, Woodland Hills, West Hills, and Chatsworth. Its gonna be a busy transfer hahahaha. I am excited to work with the sisters and see the miracles in this valley.

Oh Yeah!!!! Guess what happened to us 4 days ago....our AC broke :( it has been so hot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It doesn't get cold enough for me to crawl under my covers and snuggle until about 5am. We luckily have fans that are in our rooms to keep the air moving. I think the air unit is getting serviced today so hopefully we will be comfortable tonight. heehee

I am really grateful for the ability to play the piano. Once again I was asked to play for our sacrament meeting. It went really well! No big mess ups like last time. I love the hymns and love to read the words as I play. The Lord really does bless with the talents that we need at the moment we need them.

We met with our investigator again this week and reset her baptismal date! HOORAY!

She is really taking to the doctrine that we are teaching her. I think the word of wisdom might be hard for her since she loves her coffee but she has a good support system and she has us. We invited her to pizza and games and building cleaning. She came and had a lot of fun although she is really shy. What is better is that she came to church yesterday and had an awesome time! Because she came to the party she already knew some people at church so it all worked out.
It has been such a good week so far and I am looking forward to this next week. I'll send pictures soon so you can see who Sister Kemp is. She is super tall and makes me feel very short hahaha I used to feel tall. She has lots of catchy phrases that are starting to rub off and im not quite sure if that's a good thing. hahaha I guess we will see. :P
Oh!!! I totally forgot some of our sisters areas are bike areas!!! I am so glad I didn't sell my bike lol I can't wait to see if I go to those areas on our exchanges!
Well I need to go but I love you all and hope you are doing well. For those of you in Utah please don't float away. The amount of rainfall sounds pretty impressive. ;D
Hurrah for Israel!

Happy Labor Day!

It hardly seems like it is a holiday haha just because as missionaries we don't have time to celebrate it. ;D The only way I remember half of the holidays is by the lines in the grocery store. Isn't that pathetic? hahahaha I hope all of you have had a good week. Mine has been a little intense. To start off we had interviews with President Hall. He is such a wonderful man and I truly respect and admire him. I have been really struggling emotionally the last transfer. Of course I told him what I felt was a concern. He had us take a walk around the church building. He asked me to tell him what I felt, thought, smelled, heard etc. It was a beautiful day. One with a rare cloud cover. I described everything he asked me too. He showed me how to identify a eucalyptus tree by the leaves. Which smells amazing I might add. We also admired spider webs....ew. The point of the walk was to take time out of the day and relax. To just breathe... We went back inside and talked more about me. He once again showed me about myself things I knew but wasn't aware of. He explained to me why I have been feeling exhausted so frequently, because I have a companion who snores, I have to work harder to fill an emotional void of socialness because my companion is half deaf and doesn't hear anything I say, I have to constantly try to compensate for differences in personality with my companion, I have a hard area, I go on exchanges twice a week, and I'm not sleeping like I need to. He simply stated, "No wonder you are so tired! Look at what you are dealing with!" I was given strict orders at that point to sleep in till 10 am for a week! I negotiated it down to 9 am since I know for a fact I have never slept past 10 am without good reason. ;D So far I have only had a couple days of it and waking up not feeling exhausted is wonderful! My mood does improve with sleep ironically enough and I am better able to handle stress. However I am still struggling with the other things. Its just going to take time and effort. NO problem will ever be automatically solved and I know that. As for the void I have felt so strongly during the last 3 companions, Pres. Hall encouraged me to let God's Love fill the void. He asked me to take the time to "take a walk all by myself" obviously my companion will be there but just to be by myself mentally. He also asked me to make sure I was taking the time to play the piano as my de-stressor since I don't have my violin. He asked me how I felt about exchanges. I replied that I love them. Why? Because it allows me to feel the strength of the other sisters. Pres. Hall was very quick to understand what I meant from my view point of life right now and asked me to "cleave to your exchanges." I keep getting the thought I will be a Sister Training Leader for quite a while. Which I wouldn't entirely mind at all. He told me that a lot of the exchanges I go on he gets good feed back from the Sisters I help train. Which is a huge relief. You know, thinking about exchanges just a little bit more, it suddenly makes sense why I am so happy on exchanges and then become very sad when the exchange is done. This is the case because I find enjoyment and a feeling of accomplishment when I am on the exchange....hmm. Anyway, when I walked away from my interview I felt as if I had a deeper insight into Heavenly Fathers love for his children. There have been very few moments of profound learning experiences for me during my mission but this was one of them.

Does anyone know what a bed bug is???? Let me tell you...they are the devils angelic demons!!!!!!!!!!! AGH! and they are in our apartment again hahaha Actually I don't think they have ever left. Right before I came into the area the apartment had been treated for them. I got bit by one the very first night I was here. Its like a mosquito bite that gets swollen and itchy and red and doesn't go away for like a week then it leaves a scar regardless if you itched it or not. lol Anyway every two weeks one of us gets bite. I got three bites last week on the back of my foot. Then yesterday morning I woke up and received an ear full of how much my companion hates bed bugs. And rightly so. She has had bed bug problems for the entirety of her mission so far and she has been out for a year. I looked down at her legs, the poor thing. She is allergic to the bites and her skin welts when she gets bit. In 3 days she has gotten bit 7 times!!!!!! Our apartment is a disaster with baby power and bug dust. We called President yesterday, and I am sure he just sighed when he heard. I don't know how to help my companion other than just listening when she needs to vent. Its been a hectic 48 hours. All I can do is smile and roll my eyes because now its getting funny. hee hee hee ;D

I know all the above is somewhat dark and gloomy but things are getting better. And I am doing better.

The miracle for the week on top of everything that is going on is that we set a baptismal date with our investigator!!!! HOORAY!!!!! She was very enthusiastic about it once we cleared her concerns and then stated "But first I want to feel the tingly feeling." In quickly reviewing our discussion I figured out she was talking about the Holy Ghost. Totally a fair deal. However neither of us said something about a tingly feeling. That leads me to believe she has felt the influence of the Holy Ghost which is such a wonderful experience. I continue to pray every night that she will receive her answer that God is the "something" that exists, which she believes in. I know that once she gets her answer she will have no problem believing the rest of the message we teach.

Our zone had 4 baptisms yesterday and the 3 that we attended all had funny things that happened:

#1 He is a 56 year old man and is so sweet. When he went down the first time to get baptized his feet slipped and he didn't make it down all the way so they had to re-do the baptism. When he went down the second time the person baptizing him held him down there for a couple seconds. Suddenly we all heard bubble sounds from the water.....hahahaha instead of getting dunked he got soaked.... we all burst out laughing and it was memorable.

#2 A 12 year old kid. Sister Scrinver and I had met him the day before. His mom had recently been baptized too. He has a younger brother probably around the age of 6? Anyway when the kid being baptized went into the font the little brother got really excited. When he came up from the water the little brother suddenly yelled "YAY!!!!!!" It was so cute!

#3 This young man is 19 years old. He is a fairly tall boy. When he was being baptized he didn't bend his knees and arched his back instead. It was weird looking for sure but what ended up happening is that he landed on the bottom of the font with the brother that was baptizing him!!!! They both got dunked...hahaha Obviously they did it over and it was perfect the 2cd time.

Just the funny little things that happen hahaha

Anyway this week is going to be busy again. Transfer calls come on Saturday night....I have stopped trying to guess what will happen. To many crazy transfers have happened lately. All I know is that no one is safe to assume they are staying in an area longer than 6 weeks lol

Well I hope you all have enjoyed your holiday!!!!! I love you all lots!

Hurrah for Israel!

California Girls!

Hello!

This week has been a busy one. Sister Scrinver and I found a less active member this week!!!! We met with her and just got to know her. She lives with her fiance. At first he kept to himself and was super awkward around us. After about 10 minutes of just talking he joined us and was totally relaxed. They are game designers and programers and they are working on this really cool project for the Radisson Hotel Chain. They showed us the demo and played it in front of us so we could see how it works. They are awesome! Come to find out as we were leaving that he thought we were going to be the preachy pushy missionaries he knows his church's missionaries to be. Once he observed we aren't he joined us and we enjoyed our visit. Dont worry we didn't leave with out sharing a neutral message ;D But what is cool is we have an open invitation in their home and they have offered to feed us too!!!! Hooray!!! They are really neat people and we are looking forward to working with them.

We also got a new investigator this week. She comes from a very abusive mother unfortunately. We talked alot about Christ and His Atonement. She is very spiritual and when we had her read some verses on the atonement she could barley read because of how strongly she felt the spirit. It was an amazing lesson! Now if we could just get her to sit down long enough for us to teach her again hahahaha she is super busy.

We taught a recent convert this week. We asked some of the ward members to help us teach the 10 commandments. It was a very insightful discussion. But the best part of the lesson was when we took the hand signs of the 10 commandments (we use them to teach) and then played the game signs using them. It was so funny and totally down to the level of the ward members. I know I will never forget what some of those signs mean now! ;D I might attach a photo of the hand signs we drew out for this lesson next week. It just turned out very well overall.

On Thursday Sister Scrivner and I had a melt down over our area. We ended up meeting with President. In hindsight it was all silly but still concerning. Our ward is a YSA ward and we rely a lot on referrals. Our area is also 2/3 of the valley which has over 1 million people in it. So for us to be able to find easily is difficult because all we do is drive to get to one area to the other. With school starting and us living next to the university we should start seeing more positive results of our efforts in contacting...hopefully. President Hall was able to help us think about our area and come up with a plan for the next transfer. But that doesn't help us right now so I was a little frustrated walking away from our meeting but in the end things have turned out alright. We decided that it was going to be necessary for us to have a sit down with a group of ward members we consider our friends. We had a group of 6 people after church yesterday who we know best. We asked them to evaluate us as missionaries in who they see us as and then to describe how they want their ideal missionaries to be. It was very insightful and luckily we aren't too far off that ideal stage. Of course there are areas of improvment. In our 2 hour conversation we walked away with a game plan. The wards expectations of us are to help them learn how to give the gospel to their friends. So we are starting "Our Night." This will be a night where the ward members gather together as friends and just talk about their efforts to do missionary work. This is actually an activity that the missionaries can "assist the ward members with their missionary efforts." We haven't had this happen before in our ward so we are super excited about it. There will be some weeks where we will offer training and then other weeks we will have activities that their friends can come to. The idea will be for the ward members to run it and the missionaries participate in it. That way when there are totally different missionaries the ward can train them as to how the missionary work goes on in the ward. We walked away feeling totally uplifted and encouraged that the Lord is really mindful of our needs right now and the wards needs. I know that the spirit was leading that conversation yesterday. There is no way we could have accomplished all that we did and have an action plan after 2 hours of talking about it. After all it has taken missionaries over 7 months in this ward to finally connect with the members! haha We were both invited to move into the ward after our missions because the ward loves us so much ;D I might consider it. I have never felt so comfortable in any ward ever! as I do here. And I am a missionary! One of the most temporary people ever! The members are just great and welcoming and friendly and they all love to laugh. Which just happens to be an "ideal Missionary" characteristic, and Sister Scrivner and I love to laugh ;D It was just so good. Sorry Mom and Dad. Maybe you will lose me to California hahaha ;D

Well I think that is it for this week! I love you all and I hope you all have a wonderful Blessed week!

Hurrah for Israel!

Drained!

Hello!!!!

This week has been so busy!!! We went on exchanges twice this week. Both of them went so well and we learned a ton from our sisters but also saw a lot of miracles. When an exchange is finished we are normally pretty tired after one exchange but it was maginified by a lot with two. While on our exchange tuesday we learned that our sisters had been through a pretty rough time moving into the apartment. It has been an elders apartment for the last 12 years....We called the zone leaders and explained the situation a little bit. They got all fired up on the phone and told us that they would take care of it right away. That wasn't our intention in calling them but okay. We left it alone and then Pres. Hall called us to get clarification. We told him the same things and added "Its not necessary to move them right away. They can wait for another transfer." He agreed and that was that...until Thursday morning. We got a call from the Zone Leaders telling us that the Sisters were freaking out and crying and adament that they move ASAP because they thought they were getting mold poisioning. Needless to say we found ourselves in cleaning clothes and all plans cancelled for the day. We surprised them by showing up, took their house keys from them and banned them from the apartment with specific instructions to focus on working that day. We spent 6 HOURS cleaning just the living room, kitchen, and bath tub. We also emptied 2 closets full of 12 years worth of junk! There were so many illegal missionary items in that apartment...goodness. However we enjoyed the service project and found a great find. In one of the closets there was a beautiful frame with the first presidency's pictures in it. I showed it to Sister Scrinver. I decided to hang it up. As I went to hang it I saw the back side of the frame which actually was the front side of the frame. I couldn't believe my eyes! There were actually pictures of these darling young women behind the first Presidency!!!!! Someone totally took the idea from "The Best Two Years"! We laughed and laughed and laughed. We left sticky notes for the sisters with the hope they would laugh too. :D I included pictures so all of you could laugh too.

Okay for a miracle!!!!! When I was on the first exchange I found out some information that I am truly excited about. Remember Chatsworth area? Well when I was there my companions and I worked so hard to find investigators. They were few and far between for us. As a result we did a lot of less active work. I was always telling myself that I was planting seeds and that someday some lucky missionary was going to be able to harvest a majority of them. Well the day has come! Our dear sweet Chatsworth sisters received a phone call from a guy. He told them that Sister Dyreng and Sister Cottrell had left a pamphlet and Book of Mormon with him months ago. He asked some questions and agreed to meet with the missionaries. Well this dear fellow is getting baptized next Saturday!!!! and I am totally going to the baptism hahahaha I am so excited to see that the efforts I put into the work in Chatsworth are finally starting to be seen. Its wonderful and it has been the highlight of my week!

Last Monday the Sisters who live with us picked up a mini Missionary. We were all excited to have her join us. Unfortunately its not been such a pleasant experience. She has eaten all of us out of house and home. We explained what the organization was for all of our food in the cupboards and fridge but it didn't matter. All of us have either had to eat way less to make it through the week or go shopping again. We have even taken to hiding some food items from her. :( She eats all day long and we are beginning to wonder if she eats in her sleep too. The poor sisters have so many other problems they are dealing with because of her. Probably the most important and confusing one is that since she arrived the spirit is gone from our apartment. None of us have felt it there except for during study times in our own rooms...sometimes. She has been forced to serve a mini mission before her Bishop will pass off her papers to the Stake President. We were told by her to just deal with the problems because she was going to stick out the 2 weeks just so she can send her papers in. She refuses to try to learn how to study, work with companions let the trainer train and lead and its just a big snowball of a problem. We have called President Hall when it started to get bad but haven't talked to him since. We are going to call him again today because its horrible and none of us are having an easy time doing anything. We realized just how big of a motivator the spirit is to get us up and going and out the door and without it this week its been so hard to get moving or even have the desire to go out and work. Its been so hard and confusing to try to work everything out to the point that we have all agreed that things have started to go down hill since she came. Im sorry this all sounds so horrible and depressing and I feel bad because I have very little good things to say about the situation. As Sister Training Leaders we are very concerned about the situation. We are even going to take her for a day and do a specialized training to help her understand missionary life and the do's and don'ts of it while the other sisters just go and work as hard as they can. Whats even more sad is how their area has been affected by it this week.

On a happier note I have finally been getting some sleep! Our Elders Quorum Presidents mother suggested a tea to help relax me at night so that I can fall asleep and stay asleep. She in just a few question deducted that I dont relax at night because I am always thinking about the next day and the what if's. She said in a spanish accent, " You have to train yourself to think, 'Whatever happens tomorrow is gonna happen, and there is nothing I can do about it.' " She says her husband does the same thing. In thinking about it she is right. 1. I dont relax at night. 2. I always worry and think about the next day. So the remedy? Siete Azahares aka Seven Blossoms tea. It works so well! It doesn't taste great but it helps me relax enough that I fall asleep quickly and stay asleep till about 5:30/ 6:00. It has been wonderful. Although with exchanges I fell asleep one afternoon...oops. ;D

We also found a new investigator this week! HOORAY!!!!! She is so cute. We taught her the first lesson. I think she absorbed it but I don't think she is convinced of it yet. Thats okay! We will continue to work with her and everything will be awesome! She is receptive to us and thats important. The work is moving forward and I am excited to be apart of it.

I have been studying the war chapters and its amazing to me just how much you can relate them to misssionary work. I love Captain Moroni and the strength that he was not only to his armies but to us today. I love Alma 47 (or is it 48) where it describes the attributes of Captain Moroni. It makes me just want to be a better person. I also found a quote in Preach My Gospel from President Gordon B. Hinckley. He says, "Do you want to be happy? Forget yourself and get lost in this great cause." It really touched me when I found it because I have had a really hard time focusing lately. So thank you President Hinckley you have helped me get my head back in the game! Overall its been a great week and I have learned a ton! I am excited for a new week. I hope you all have a postive week and that you see the Lords hands in your lives more fully. I love you all!!!!!

Hurrah for Israel!

Sister Cottrell

My Week!

Oh my goodness I can't believe that its already Monday! Last night I realized that we are entering into week 3 of the transfer and it made me a little sick inside. We just had transfers! We can't be getting to the next transfer that fast!!!!! When you are on the Lords time, time really doesn't exist. Its the craziest thought and feeling ever!

Sister Scrivner and I had this crazy opportunity last Monday night to go to dinner at a members home. They told us that some previous missionaries were visiting and would be joining us. We were excited to meet them! What none of us were expecting is that these two girls were both Sister Scrivner and I's trainers, trainers. Sister Mix trained my trainer Sister Haws, and Sister Ware trained Sister Hermansen who trained Sister Scrivner. Its a crazy mission genealogy thing. We had a lot of fun hearing some of their experiences. Its not everyday you get to meet people like them. hahaha

We had Missionary Leadership Council to go to this week too. Normally the day is very scheduled out and runs smoothly. For some reason though this time it wasn't. We had a schedule but didn't follow it. President Hall didn't get much sleep, and I mean maybe 1 or 2 hours the night before. We quickly found out that when he is tired his filter shuts down. I don't think I have ever seen him act so funny or have so many unfinished thoughts. It was entertaining to say the least but we understand and we aren't judging him for it. ;D We talked a lot about the areas we are in and how we can help our ward understand how everything will work when each ward has multiple sets of missionaries. This conversation was very important because we are opening 18 new areas this next transfer!!!!! We are also getting another 40 + missionaries. I don't know how our valleys will be able to hold all of us! I don't think we even got to our training portion of our meeting it was such a crazy sort of meeting. We also talked about the results of our goals for baptisms. Last month we had the goal of 30 baptisms as a mission which we reached! We made the decision as a council to keep our goal the same for August and September to see if we could keep consistent in our goal reaching. Especially since we are a 50% church. Speaking of baptisms. Our zone this last month was the top baptizing zone! We found out that our mission actually had 34 baptisms not 32. Some missionaries failed to submit key indicators. Out of the 34 our zone had 11 baptisms!!!!!! It was so cool to hear these results when our original goal was to have 6. We totally blew our goal out of the water, and we are working hard already to see that it happens again. There are so many changes to the missionaries way of thinking and working. Some days it feels hard to keep up, but some how we do.

This week I had the wonderful opportunity to revisit the memory of having a toilet exploding in my apartment in Utah. In our apartment we live with another set of Sisters who cover a different area. Their toilet exploded for some unknown reason and affected the entire apartment. It was wonderful to come home to. I am sincerely glad it wasn't my toilet this time. ;D hahahahaha

I went on exchanges this week with one of our new missionaries. Her name is Sister Bishop. She has been struggling quite a bit with the adjustment to missionary life and with her companion. Through talking for several hours we came to the conclusion she and I have some very similar experiences. It was so cool to be with a missionary who is very new and yet she teaches as if she has been out for 6+ weeks. She is simply amazing. I have come to feel a huge fear over the possibility of training again, however being able to work with her and take the true lead of the companionship and teach her was amazing!!!! I am just going to have to remember not all new missionaries are Sister Peatross. I cannot believe how scarring the experience was. I might just tell President that I wont train again unless I get a missionary like Sister Bishop! (Just Kidding ;D)

Our Relief Society Presidents sister just got home from her mission this last week. Last night we went over to say hello and see if we could set up some times for her to come out with us. We had a wonderful time visiting with her and I think it brought her a small degree of comfort. Jana (RS President) walked us out to the car. We talked for a bit and she started explaining some things that are going on. We ended up convincing her to come with us to a potential home, even though we just talked to her sister about coming with us lol. Jana came and I think she really felt uplifted by the visit. When we knocked on the door for our potentials home she answered!!!! It was a miracle and she set up the appointment with us! We are so excited and we know that because Jana was with us we were able to see the miracle and it helped us all out emotionally. It was just thrilling and what better way to help the ward see what we do than to have the leaders come with us.

I also was surprised with a request to be the pianist for sacrament meeting yesterday. I didn't have any time to prepare so it was a fly by the seat of my skirt type of deal. I felt so bad because I totally destroyed "Called to Serve" and it was the closing song...... I had been so nervous and my hands were shaking!!!!!! The chorister was so sweet though. She told me I did just fine and that if anyone said otherwise she would beat them up for me. It was really sweet of her to say that because 1. I haven't had the opportunity to really get to know her yet 2. she is super quiet and keeps to herself. So it really touched me and made me feel slightly better about myself.

Sorry this email is short this week! We didn't have anything really specific happen other than what I have already shared. I hope you all enjoy your week!!!! I love you all!

Hurrah for Israel!!!!

Love,

Sister Cottrell

Uh....It's a Long One!

Hello Everyone!!!!!

This week has been so different for me!

On Tuesday we went to Transfer meeting and rejoiced in our hearts at the sight of 29 missionaries walking into the chapel. They are the kind of missionaries our mission is in desperate need of right now. They already know how to talk to everyone and they are energetic. I know I have said this before but every group that comes in is more prepared than the last. It is just so amazing! After transfer meeting and transporting Elders bikes to their rightful owners and leaving mine to be sold at the mission office ( :( ) we finally got to an appointment with one of our recent converts. He has been struggling so much because he has been keeping his conversion a seceret from his family because they are staunch Catholics and wouldn't approve at all. He is 29 and can make his own decisions but at the time of his baptism didn't want to face the problems and conflicts with his family. Unfortunately the seceret was discovered by his mom and some pretty hurtful things were sad. The bigger problem is his father who doesn't know yet and his mom is even worried about when he finds out. So we really just did alot of spiritual refortifying and he walked away more confident that things were going to work out. We made plans to have another appointment with him so that we could teach him some techiniques of how to tell his dad about it and how to pillow his defenses without getting beaten. Its gonna be rough but I have full confidence that he will handle it like a champ.

On Wednesday we taught the Restoration to our NEW investigator from Russia!!!!! Yes he is now an investigator and so amazing. When we explained the purpose of life is to prepare to meet God and strive to become like Him our investigator said, "Wow, thats beautiful." haha The light of Christ "is strong with this one." (for all you Star Wars fans ;D) He is just so great to teach. He asked if we could get him a Russian Book of Mormon since English is a second language and he thinks in Russian. We set out the next day to our mission office to go get a Russian Book of Mormon. We literally walked into the office staff meeting. It was so embarrassing! We totally forgot about it. hahaha we left very quickly. I don't think I have been in and out quicker from the office. ;D We got home and started our day. Around dinner time we got a call from some Zone leaders asking if I had a bike to sell. I said yes but that it was at the office. By the end of our conversation it was apparent that we needed to drive back up to Santa Clarita to go get the bike. We made it just in time before the office closed and got the bike out of storage. When we finally met up with the Zone Leaders we turned the bike over to them. I cried the whole way home. I kept asking myself why it is that we get so attached to inanimate objects. Its so not fair! Then I realized that Calvin was what saved my sanity during the one transfer I had with my last companion. He was the only thing I could get my frustration out on, he was my stress relief and I knew that he wasn't going to talk back to me. Calvin was always there for me. So I got super attached to him. I mourned the loss of Calvin for about 20 minutes and then needed to move on to other things.

One night we took all the institute students out with us to a booth we had set up outside of the building which is located directly across the street of the college campus. They have been studying Preach My Gospel all summer and finally got to put what they learned to the test. There were so many YSA's I finally started dividing them and sending them to different locations in the neighborhood and on campus. They came back so fast with all of their material gone!!!! We couldn't write our contact info fast enough on the pass a long cards! Some came back with really cool experiences. They were running up to cars waiting for red lights to change they walked with people who passed by and they gave out "pictures of Jesus." It was so fun we literally did nothing!!!! At the end of an hour we estimated that we gave away about 150 cards to people and probably talked to 200 people. It was just so amazing and I think it really helped the members of our ward get excited about missionary work now that they know they can do it.

On Friday morning I woke up at 4:50am with an intense headache. I went out to the couch grabbed an ice pack and tried to fall asleep but the pain in my head was extreme. I remember hearing alarms going off but no one came out of their rooms so I just stayed on the couch. When I did get up I looked at the clock and it was 8am! Suddenly it hit me that I was light sensitive. I thought, "Oh no!" The start of a migraine. I went and crawled into bed where it was dark. My companion said good morning and I replied that it was not a good morning lol I explained why and she said well district meeting is at 9.... I just started crying. Not today, I thought. She suggested a hot shower might help but that required being in a room filled with light. I finally made my way and got started. I went to district meeting with sun glasses on. They were so nice to turn the lights out for me but there was still a ton of light from the large window. About half way through I started getting waves of nausea, weakness and getting sound sensitive. I knew I was done for at that point. By the time a very long district meeting ended I was in no condition to drive home so another set of sisters drove us and the Elders drove our car home. The elders gave me a blessing and in it I was reminded to rely on the Atonement of Christ. That alone gave me a ton of food for thought for the rest of the day. Sister Hall (Pres. Halls wife) ordered a double dose of medicine for me and a dark silent room. Sister S. being the wonderful companion she is gave me a shoulder, neck and scalp massage which instantly released half the pain in my head. I think grinding my teeth because of stress is a big factor and very little sleep in the last week. I couldn't believe it! I fell asleep for several hours after that. When I woke up I just started praying and thanking Heavenly Father for the blessings I had recieved that morning. As I reflected on the Atonement I suddenly realized that in order for Christ to have suffered all pain, affliction and suffering he would have had to experience a migraine. Poor man......I had never had a headache quite like the one I had that morning. I suddenly felt peace, comfort, and a love for Christ that went deeper than just gratitude. It amazed me just how much more real the atonement becomes when I learn more about it. And I never stop learning about it. After a while of resting I finally got up and was able to be in a lighted room. Sister S and I talked for just a little bit when the phone rang. Elder Stucki (district leader) called and started frantically explaning, "Elder Miller took a spill on his bike, and his arm might be broken, and we cant get any priesthood holders to answer their phones! Can you come get us?" We ran out the door calling Pres. Hall to let him know we were picking up the Elders even though it is against the rules to have Elders and Sisters in the same car. When he responded he said, "Oh wonderful Sisters! Keep me informed of how it all goes." We laughed and continued on our way. By the time we got them to the Doctors office the Zone Leaders finally showed up. hahaha. Elder Millers arm is indeed broken and they are now in a car. So that day was busy and tiring and I still ended up sleeping all night even though I slept all day. It was just a wierd headache kind of day.

I want to take a few moments and tell you of a miracle that happened earlier this week. I know I talked about mail last week but I am going to revisit it. Sister Haws is a Sister Training Leader in the Bakersfield mission. I recieved a letter from her this week and in the envelope was another envelope addressed to me. On the second envelope was the sticky note that explained she had been on exchanges in Palmdale and saw my mail laying on the table and that she just got the feeling for some weird reason she needed to take care of it and send it to me. The letter was from a friend I was very worried about not getting mail from due to the abrupt transfer to my current area. The letter was almost 3 weeks old!!!!!!! I'll let you make your own conclusions about that situation....

I have received so much mail from everyone that I have just melted into gratitude to you and my Heavenly Father. I am so grateful for the prompting Sister Haws acted on. It helped me so much!

Yesterday was probably the hardest day of my mission so far there is a lot of details that go with it and this email is already really long but I will try to sum it up. My companion  comes from a VERY military family. She is a fixer of problems and always is ready to go go go. She sometimes is intimidating and I have a hard time communicating to her because of it. A couple days ago I was having some questions about processes we go through as Sister Training Leaders. She was ready as ever to respond with an answer of thats just the way it is. I wasn't satisfied with the answer and she couldn't understand why. I know I'm leaving out details here but I hope you can follow me. I asked her sometime later for help on how I can express myself better. She didn't have an answer for that one. Then yesterday after church Pres. Hall suddenly showed up. I was thrown into a ball of emotions. I couldn't figure out why he was there. When I asked my comp about it, it was apparent she had organized the meeting and I somehow missed the memo in the phone when she handed it to me to catch up on the messages she had sent. She had already told me of some conversations she had had on the phone so I wasn't looking for anything. When we sat down and Sis. S. stated the reason for the meeting she said it was to help us in our communication with each other. President Hall asked me what I wanted to talk about and I explained that I was shocked and surprised becaused I didn't know this was happening and that I was too emotional to talk right then. I was put in a seperate room at that point. Luckily there was a piano for me and I cried harder than I have ever cried in the last 7 months. About an hour and a half later I was finally summoned and President Hall and I just talked. He told me that if I needed to throw a chair across the room I could haha all I need is a punching bag but thats okay it wasn't necessary. I expressed all the emotions that I had been feeling. Betrayed, hurt, pain, frustration etc. He asked me to just get everything out. I told him I was tired of feeling like all my companions hate me and that no one can seem to get along with me. Between Sisters D, P and S. I was up to my ears in frustration! I told him I felt done, that I wanted to go home. I was tired of living my own personal hell. Which later he agreed with me on. In the end we had talked about Sister P.and the frustration I had had over the fact that I can't seem to get away from the troubles that happened in our companionship. He told me some things that I have been sworn to my grave in secrecy on, which helped me let go of the guilt I thought was mine. He flat out told me that I was not the cause of the problems in the companionship. It wasn't me. It simply wasn't me. I cannot tell you how much I have longed to hear those words. To feel the guilt leave to know that I was okay...it wasn't me. I hope you can understand my relief. As for Sister S, well with President Halls help he and I came to the conclusion she and I are very different. Because of the military background she is always ready and always has a solution. As for me, I am the type of person that likes to process and think about things before I answer or take action. I need time to step away from a situation to think or calm down before I can move on. He asked me several different questions in which he told me my responses were classic Sister Cottrell responses and that it was totally fine. He commended me on my comment from when we started that " I dont think I can talk right now." He said that it was a brilliant response and asked me to try to continue doing it in the future. He told me to always remember 2 things: 1. I am an awesome missionary. 2. President Hall loves me for who I am and to never change. He quized me several times about those 2 things to make sure that I remember them. I love President Hall, In our conversation we laughed I cried and he counseled me on my companionship but also in my relationship with my future husband. He can do that since he used to be a strengthening marriage teacher. :D We came back together and it was quite naturally tense. President Hall talked mostly and asked us how we were going to make decisions on a couple things. What he really did was help us come up with the tools we need to make OUR decisions and not do things Sister S.s way or my way but that we do it OUR way. Even though at first I was mad and angry and frustrated and hurt and all sorts of other things I am really grateful I was finally just able to unload and that President Hall is now aware of everything. Even the snoring problem. (He laughed alot when I told him all about my adventures with a snoring comp) lol

So that has been my week. Ups and Downs for sure but tons of learning opportunities! It has been a good week over all. I am so sorry this is such a long email so I'll say good bye now ;D I love you all very much!!!!!

Hurrah for Israel!
